The report "The market shares of the ten largest automobile countries" covers a period of nineteen years from 2000 to 2020. Against this background this report highlights the changes that happened in the short term from 2020 to 2010.

Update October 26th, 2021 - In the ranking of the ten largest automobile countries during the period from 2010 to 2020 five out of the ten largest automobile countries changed their position. China as production location for national and international car manufacturers can significantly exoand its world market share.


The background for the change of the world market shares of the automobile countries consists of rising global auto production frim 2010 to 2020 and the subsequent sharp decline up to 2020 to the level of 2010.

The course of the index shows that the decline in production in the three years from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2020 exceeds in duration and depth that of the global economic crisis of 2008/09.


Thus the change in the global market shares of the largest automotive countries shows the impact of this biggest production decline in 20 years on the individual automotive countries.

The US, Mexico and Russia improving their positions...

Three countries improve their positions, the USA, Mexico and Russia.


The USA increases its global market share by 1.4 percentage points from position 3 to position 3. Mexico increases its global market share by 1.1 percentage points and improves its ranking from position 9 to position 7.


Russia becomes part of the top 10 automotive countries for the first time in 10th place, up from 14th. Its unchanged world market share of 1.8% is enough to move it up into the top ten automotive countries in the face of a sharp drop in global auto production.

...Japan and Brazil worsen their position

Two countries, Japan and Brazil, worsen their positions.


Japan's world market share shrinks by 2 percentage points to 10.4% and is thus below that of the USA with 11.4%. Brazil loses 1.8 percentage points of its world market share and deteriorates from 7th to 9th place with a world market share of 2.6%.

China is the big winner...

China is the big winner among the ten largest automotive countries. In ten years, it has increased its share of the world market by 9 percentage points to 32.5%, well above average.


This means that China as a production location can benefit from both phases of world auto production - its growth and its decline.


The significant increase in the market share of the 10 largest automotive countries by 3.5 percentage points from 75.9% to 79.4% of world auto production signals a growing concentration of production. In other words: Nearly 80% of the world's car production takes place in just ten countries.

Germany is the big loser of the last ten years. Its share of the world market has shrunk by 2.8 percentage points to 4.8%. However, with global auto production falling recently, Germany is able to maintain its 4th place.
