The market shares of the largest automobile countries 2010 to 2017

The largest automobile countries increased their market shares at the expense of the middle group of countries

The report "The market shares of the ten largest automobile countries" covers a period of fifteen years from 2000 to 2015. Against this background this report highlights the changes that happened in the short term from 2010 to 2017.

Half of the ten countries changed their ranking within seven years

Update May 22nd, 2018 - The first four positions and the last one remain unchanged in the course of seven years while the remaining five countries change their ranking among the ten largest automobile countries.

India and South Korea switch their ranking to the advantage of India reaching rank five in 2017 while South Korea drops to rank six. Mexico increases its market share at the worldwide automobile production from 3% to 4.2% changing its position from rank nine to rank seven.

Spain's world market share plunges from 4.4% to 2.9% by one and a half percentage points descending to position eight.

Concentration among the automobile countries is intensifying

In seven years only the top tear of the countries is able to increase its market share. This concerns the three countries China, the USA and Japan with world market shares of 10% and more. Their total market share increases clearly from 45.9% to 51.3%. So just three countries count for more than half of the global auto production.

On the other hand automobile countries with more than 5% up to under 10% market share get reduced to only one country in 2017, i.e. Germany. South Korea counting stil for 5.5% market share in 2010, sees this share plunging to 4.2% seven years later.

Five countries (without South Korea) with fewer than 5% market share lose relatively small market shares in the last seven years.

So the internationalization of the automobile production is intensifying at the same time the concentration even among the ten largest automobile countries in regard to two aspects.

  • The three largest automobile countries, i.e. 30%, increase their market shares producing already more than half of all ten countries.

  • This concentration on the largest automobile countries occurs at the expense of the middle auto countries from which only Germany can cope in 2017.
