Only the largest automobile countries are gaining market shares

The report "The market shares of the ten largest automobile countries" covers a period of fifteen years from 2000 to 2015. Against this background this report highlights the changes that happened in the short term from 2010 to 2015.

The ranking remains mainly stable within five years

Update April 4th, 2016 - The first six positions remain unchanged in the course of five years. Just three countries change their ranking among the ten largest automobile countries.


Mexico increases its market share at the worldwide automobile production from 3% to 3.9% changing its position from rank nine to rank seven.

Spain's world market share plunges from 4.4% to 3.0% descending to position eight.


Brazil loses world market shares by nearly half percentage point dropping to rank nine.

Concentration among the automobile countries is intensifying

In five years only the top tear of the countries is able to increase its market share. This concerns the three countries China, the USA and Japan with world market shares of 10% and more.


On the other hand automobile countries with more than 5% up to under 10% market share or with fewer than 5% lose world market shares in the last five years.

So the internationalization of the automobile production is intensifying at the same time the concentration even among the ten largest automobile countries.

  • Three of these ten countries, i.e. 30%, produce already nearly two thirds of all ten countries.
  • These three countries, China, the USA and Japan manufacturer the half od the worldwide automobiles but accout only for 7% of all the countries that produce automobiles.
