Wood processing machines and machinery industry 2008 - 2020
Wood processing machines signicantly weaker than machinery industrie in terms of production and sales
This report compares the course of production and sales of woodworking machinery with machinery industry in Germany from 2008 to 2020.
November 17, 2021 - Production of wood processing machines dropped since 2011, the year the global economic crisis of 2008/2009 was overcome, and this decline worsened significantly in 2019.
On average, woodworking machinery production fell by 9.5% each year over the nine years from 2011 to 2020. Finally, production more than halved.
The drastic decline in production in the wood processing machinery sector is nine times greater than the decline in machinery industry. There, production fell by -1.0% annually from 2011 to 2020.
The unit numbers of planing, sanding and bending machines comprise 70% of the industry production in 2020, but their share of industry sales is less than half that at 30%.
The unit numbers of splitting and chipping machines are 18% of industry production, presses 8% and other processing machines 3%.
Presses are the industry's revenue driver, accounting for 47% of industry sales.
Sales development of wood processing machines significantly below average only since 2019
In contrast to production, sales of wood processing machines grew almost continuously after the crisis was overcome up to 2018. At +3.8% p.a., this growth from 2011 to 2018 was significantly above average compared to sales in machinery industry, which grew by 2.5% p.a. during this period.
Then, wood processing machines' sales dropped abruptly by 45% in both 2019 and 2020.
From 2011 to 2020, wood processing machines sales declined by -3.6% on average each year, while those of the machinery industry increased by +0.3% on average each year.
The wood processing machinery sector thus shows a significantly below-average development of production and sales compared to the machinery industry since the global economic crisis was overcome.
