Market shares of the control suppliers since 1998

Which changes show the decisions of the machine-builders regarding the main supplier of the control technology during a period of nine years from 1998 to 2006?

March 1st, 2010 - We will investigate how many machine-builders do call the one or the other supplier as main supplier of the control technology at the machines. Main supplier means that the control technology of this supplier equips the main part of the machines. Beyond that there might be still further control suppliers which we will leave unconsidered.

1998 main tendency concentration

In the year 1998 the investigated machine-builders called 20 control suppliers. To how many machine-builders these control suppliers deliver in each case? Three groups show up.

The group with the most pronounced market penetration concerns 5% of the control suppliers and it supplies to 70% of the investigated machine-builders. This group covers only Siemens. Thus Siemens shows the relatively strongest market penetration.

In the second group each control supplier delivers to more than 5% of the investigated machine-builders. In this group only the in-house solutions of the control technology are involved. 6% of the machine-builders use in-house solutions.

Finally in the third group each of the 18 control suppliers delivers to 5% or less of the investigated machine-builders. Those are in alphabetical order ABB, B&R, Bachmann, Beckhoff, Ferrocontrol, GE Fanuc, Indramat, Kuhnke, Lauer, Mitsubishi, Moeller, Omron, PMA, Procom, Resotec, Rockwell, Schleicher, Schneider. Thus the result in a sentence is for 1998: Main tendency concentration.

2006 concentration and variety

Nine years later the decisions of the machine-builders regarding control suppliers have changed the picture decisively. The concentration is joined by the variety in terms of supplier choice.

Siemens shows unchanged in the first group the position of the relatively strongest market penetration. Its absolute height decreased however from 70% to 45% of the machine-builders.

The clearest changes are focused in the second group. The in-house solutions remain in this group also nine years later, used by more than 5% of the machine-builders. In addition three further control suppliers enter this group, i.e. in alphabetical order B&R, Beckhoff and Rockwell. This group comprises now 22% of the control suppliers and increases its market penetration from 6% to 37% of the machine-builders.

Finally in the third group each of the 13 control suppliers delivers to 5% or less of the investigated machine-builders. Those are in alphabetical order ABB, Bachmann, Bosch Rexroth, Eckelmann, Elau, Epis, GE Fanuc, Jetter, Kuka, Omron, Schneider, Sigmatek, Yaskawa RC.

Thus the result of making decisions regarding control suppliers during nine years is:

  • in-house solutions persist and with them the appropriate gap in the marketplace from the view of the machine builders concerned
  • the main tendency concentration turned to main tendency concentration and variety.

A last remark regarding the basis of these trends: They are based on data of 300 machine-builders 1998 and of about 130 larger machine-builders 2006 in the 10 resp. 11 automation-relevant sectors.
