Map of China

Update May 19th, 2023 - In 2022 industrial production grew by 3.6% compared to the previous year according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China. In 2021, growth was still 9.6% to 2020.

We put these growth rates in the long-term context of industrial production1 since the year 2000.

The index of industrial production increased continuously and dynamically in the years from 2000 to 2011, i.e. with higher growth rates.

The index of the industrial production in China from 2000 to 2022.

Slowing growth of industrial production since 2012

We now consider the years since the beginning of the world economic crisis (2015 = 100):

  • 2008 to 2009 + 5.4 index points
  • 2009 to 2010 + 8.5 index points
  • 2010 to 2011 + 8.7 index points.

Since 2012 the index of industrial production has been rising with declining values:

  • 2011 to 2012 + 7.9 index points
  • 2012 to 2013 + 7.3 index points
  • 2013 to 2014 + 7.2 index points
  • 2014 to 2015 + 5.7 index points
  • 2015 to 2016 + 6.0 index points
  • 2016 to 2017 + 7.0 index points
  • 2017 to 2018 + 7.0 index points
  • 2018 to 2019 + 6.8 index points
  • 2019 to 2020 + 3.5 index points
  • 2020 to 2021 +12.5 index points
  • 2021 to 2022 +  5.1 index points.

So the growth of industrial production has been softening since 2012. Since 2000 die highest growth rate happened in 2011 and the lowest in 2020.

2021 industrial production surged by 12.5 index points year-on-year, the highest increase since the global economic crisis of 2008/2009.

1) The National Bureau of Statistics of China only publishes growth rates of industrial production from year-on-year. We have indexed these data in order to create a long-term time line of indudtrial production in China.
