Production and sales of textile machines slightly above average until 2018 then deeper decline

This report compares the development of production and sales of textile machines from 2008 to 2022 with the German machinery industry. The pre-crisis year 2008 is set equal to 100 in each case. This makes differences in the development of textile machines and machinery industry visible at a glance.

June 21st, 2023 - After overcoming the global economic crisis of 2008/2009, textile machinery production developed slightly above average compared with machinery industry.


In 2011, textile machinery production was 6% above the pre-crisis level of 2008, while machinery industry was still 7% below the pre-crisis level. In 2018, production of machinery industry reached the pre-crisis level after 10 years, while production of textile machinery already stood 7% above the pre-crisis level.


Since 2019, the slightly above-average development of textile machinery production reversed to a below-average development relative to machinery industry.

In both 2019 and 2020, production of textile machines fell by 32 index points, twice as much as that of machinery industry with 15 index points. 


As a result of the years 2008 to 2022, textile machinery production shrank by an average of -1.2% per year that of machinery industryring significantly less by -0.6% p.a.

Sales of textile machines grew firstly above average then falling down doubled than machinery industry

The sales development of textile machines is similar to the production of textile machines at a slightly higher level: an above-average development until 2018, then a deeper fall in 2019 and 2020 compared to machinery industry.


At 35 index points, textile machinery sales fell twice as sharply in these two years as the sales of machinery industry by 15 index points.

So textile machinery sales stagnating by +0.1% on average each year from 2008 to 2022, while those of the machinery industry growing slightly by +1.2% per year over this period.

Domestic sales of textile machines below average

In terms of foreign sales, the above-average development in the period from 2008 to 2018 is also reversed to a below-average development from 2019 to 2022.


In 2019 and 2020, foreign sales of textile machinery fell by 41 index points two and a half times more sharply than those of machinery industry by 16 index points.

Domestic sales of textile machinery decline by an average of -2.9% each year over the fourteen years from 2008 to 2022, while those of the machinery industry stagnate at -0.1% per year.
